Star Citizen is in a development stage. Although the game has playable modules, it can be very challenging for some of us to learn even the basics from flight functions to game packages or even where to find other information navagating the official forums. This will get you started, you will have questions not covered here but some of these links will guide you in the right direction.

You may choose to upgrade your choice at any time or add more ships to your fleet.
UPGRADE YOUR SHIP
Choose your ship carefully. You may choose to upgrade ship(s) you have purchased at any time, however your money is always best spent after doing a little research. Keep in mind you may choose to liquidate your ship for store credits to purchase other ships. You may also choose to upgrade paying only the difference. If for example you like a $90 ship and you already purchased a $45 ship you would only pay $45 through the upgrade, not the full additional $90. All upgrades will be processed through your "MY RSI" section on the Robert Space Industries (RSI) website.

BUYING NOW INSTEAD OF LATER
Aside from purchasing a digital copy of the game and a starter ship for a minimun of $45 USD, you are not obligated to buy anything. All games have an initial purchase wether it be on a disc or digital download. Star Citizen is no different in that sense. All ships available for purchase on the website will be available in game for in game currency (UEC). When the game is released (date TBD) all $USD ships will be removed from the website, arguably removing any pay to win element. Any ships purchased between now and then are yours to keep, even after the game officially launches. You will see ship prices go up and down as the crowd funding for development continues to pay for the ongoing development. Typically we are offered a limited time sale price, then the sale price will go up. The mechanics will be extensive so if you fall in love with the development buying the game now and being part of it every step of the way will only benifit you.
